Emmanuel Church Lighting Design

APW Lighting Consultancy Ltd was invited in as a lighting consultant to assess the current lighting application by calculating the energy usage, provide advice on replacement lamps or luminaires, and increase lighting levels as well as reducing maintenance costs and issues.

Problem: -

Thirty years ago Emmanuel Church was installed with four decorative pendants each with 22 x 40w E27 lamps. A total of 3520W is running 5 days a week 8 hours a day and 4 hours a day over the weekend.

The main problem Emmanuel Church had with the luminaires was the maintenance. The luminaires were placed on a ceiling at 6M high, with the bottom of the luminaire still being 3.8M from finished floor level. Not only was this a problem for the caretaker but also a massive safety issue with regards using A frame ladders.

A typical GLS type lamp only has a life of 1000 hours, which meant continuous replacement of the lamps on a regular basis and over time this was starting to damage the lamp holders and lamp holder connections.

The original luminaires were running with 22 x 40w GLS E27 type lamps. The GLS type lamps only have an average life of 1000 hours, these lamps running 8 hours a day would realistically only last 125 days. In essence this equates to around half a year, which meant every half a year someone has to start replacing the lamps.

These lamps running for 8 hours a day 260 days a year, at a cost of l0p a KW/h, would roughly cost £732 a year to run.

Solutions: -

Increasing the lamp life and providing an energy saving solution with dimmable capabilities and increasing the lighting levels was at the forefront of this project.

Three alternative products were put forward to the committee for this project.

The first proposal was a low energy options using the Megaman 9w ES Dimmerable Candle Energy saver which has an output similar to that of a 45w GLS type lamp. These lamps have an average lamp life of 10,000 hours, which means there should be no maintenance for over 5 years and will also guarantee an instant 77.5% energy saving due to a total power consumption of 792W.

These lamps running for 8 hours a day 260 days a year, at a cost of 10p a KW/h, would roughly cost around £164.74 a year to run.

Although these lamps are more expensive than the typical GLS lamps, the consideration was the reduction in maintenance with a predicted replacement of lamps around 5 years.

The second alternative put forward was 5 x Whitecroft Atlanta 4x42w TC-T High Bay c/w Acrylic refractor.

This luminaire has been chosen for its excellent light output, as well as its versatility for dimming using DALI or DSI ballasts as well as incorporating emergency control gear.

Using a computer generated lighting program, this layout produced an average of 200 lux (recommended by CIBSE) with a uniformity of 0.79 compared with the 0.57 uniformity with the original luminaires. The Low Energy lamps for this luminaire is a TC-T type with an output of 3200 lumens per lamp compared with 400 lumens for the Megaman energy saver, this is nearly equivalent to a 300w GLS type lamp. These lamps have an average lamp life of 12,000 hours. Realistically there should be no lamp replacements for nearly 6 years. These lamps will also guarantee a 72.7% energy saving due to a total power consumption of 960W.

These lamps running for 8 hours a day 260 days a year, at a cost of 10p a KW/h, would roughly cost £200 a year to run.

The third alternative put forward was 8 x ASD litePod 2x49w T5 c/w opal diffuser.

This luminaire has been chosen for its excellent light output and built in uplight to illuminate the ceiling, as well as its versatility for dimming. These luminaires can be placed on one push to make switch, or the use of a hand controller with the aid of a ceiling mounted sensor.

This layout produced an average of 223 lux recommend for this area with a uniformity of 0.62 compared with the 0.57 uniformity with the original luminaires.

The Low Energy lamps for this luminaire is a T5 type with an output of 4300 lumens per lamp compared with 400 lumens for the Megaman energy saver, this is equivalent to a 300w GLS type lamp. These lamps have an average lamp life of 24,000 hours. Realistically there should be no maintenance for 11½ years. These lamps will also guarantee an 83% energy saving due to a total power consumption of 592.8W.

These lamps running for 8 hours a day 260 days a year, at a cost of 10p a KW/h, would roughly cost around £123 a year to run, saving around £608 a year on electricity bills.

Resolution: -

The ASD LitePod 2x49w DSI Dimming with additional emergency control gear was used for the project with great effect, creating an increase in light levels just below 300 lux (day 1), an even uniformity throughout the congregational and organ areas as well as achieving an energy saving of 83% and bringing their lighting bill down to around £123.

APW Lighting not only designed and installed the lighting layout but went one step further by finding a round push to make momentary switch so they could keep their lighting control panel. The type of switches were discussed with and purchased from APEM, who also added a little twist and incorporated a 240v neon so the buttons illuminated.

The church has achieved a payback time of 2 years for the cost of luminaires and energy savings.
